Saving Private Ryan Working on the sound

During this Media Studies afternoon class, we analyzed the sound of an extract from Saving Private Ryan and in order for us to really concentrate on the sound, our teacher decided to show us the scene without any image, just plain black screen with sound. At first I didn't understand what was the point of such bizarre exercise but then I realized that it indeed allowed me to appreciate the sound, the music better and feel the events better.

- Hearing the beach waves at the beginning, allows the audience to guess that the event is happening on the beach.

- With the sound of heavy artillery and the army-style shouting of men, you can tell that there is fighting  going on.

- The hearers almost immediately recognize Tom Hank's voice and from it, it is easy to say that he is the commander and the main character in the film.
