What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your product?

The annotated version of "Equinox"

Evaluation Task 5

Since our thriller has an aspect of sci-fi in it, our primary audience will be between the ages of 16 to 25, it will also be targeted at male audiences mostly due to the presence of supernatural creatures and violence in this particular film. As a team, we didn’t want to target “Equinox” at a younger audience because we wanted people to appreciate the slower pace of the events happening in a thriller as well as notice the details which will eventually contribute to the meaning of the film.

First, we built up the tension by using the alarming sounds when the titles were rolling to lure the audience but we also used the passing of time as the motif, which was indicated by an alarm going off and character constantly looking at his watch.

Our main visual effect which we consider the “eyecandy” in the film, is the portal. Its main purpose is to intrigue the audience and transfer them into another world where anything or everything is possible.

Our secondary audience should be between the ages of 26 to 35. The reason we believe this age group is our secondary audience is because story wise our film is interesting and different. This audience is mature enough to really appreciate the films vision and the motif. It is also highly likely that they will be able to emotionally connect and understand our main character Chris Clark who is not a typical hero like the handsome Clark Kent from Superman or as wealthy as Bruce Wayne but he is curious, real and persistent which in its self is humbly admiring.

We are planning to appeal to our secondary audience through the unhurried shots of the countryside and the character’s vehicle at the beginning of the opening sequence which would be more agreeable with those who appreciate the detailed storytelling in the film.

Evaluation Task 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Audience plays the key ingredient when the film gets distributed. I have come up with an idea for the target audience to whom our film "Equinox" will appeal. Since we want to get as many movie goers as we can, it is important to advertise our film not only to our target audience but to other individuals also who have different characteristics and/or personality.

This is Mike. He is a junior at a university. In his free time, he likes to play video games in his dorm and go out to watch sci-fi films with his friends. He loves technology and considers Bill Gates "the greatest man alive". He also likes to read books on Conspiracy theories and in his university he is a member of a "Who's watching who" club which discusses variety of those theories. Adam is young, smart, curious and he cannot wait to watch our film "Equinox".

The real example of Mike would be my friend Louis

   - Louis's favorite film is a sci-fi "District 9" which has conspiracy elements in it.
   - He is a student in Caltech university and in his spear time he attends clubs which concern complicity.
   - He also loves technology like his iPad.

Here is an example of our secondary audience

This is Dan. He is in his mid thirties, he works in a business company and has a family. To relive stress from work and family, he occasionally enjoys watching films. Sci-fi is his favorite genre and "The Insider" is his favorite film. There are a lot of similarities which can be drawn from The Insider and our film Equinox. They are both about conspiracy theories and they also have a lot of suspense and mystery that Dan likes. Another hobby of Dan's may include the social media. He particularly likes Facebook and Twitter.

A real example of Dan would be Adam.

    -  His favorite film is "Monsters" which has an alien invasion plot.
    - He loves watching sci-films at home in his spear time.
    - He likes social media websites, Twitter in particular

Evaluation Task 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product? Lionsgate
Lionsgate is commercially successful independent film and television distribution company that distributed over 100 films. The first reason why Lionsgate should distribute our film is the financial stability of a company. After releasing their highest grossing film: The Hunger Games, the company is looking for the next big science fiction movie and "Area 51" could be what the management is looking for. Also, our film needs a big company like Lionsgate to back up the financial side of things as to the continuation of our movie requires a lot of detailed special effects the budget between $20 and $30 million which is an average budget for Lionsgate distributed films. Another reason why "Area 51" matches the criteria is the stylization of the film. Just like the lately distributed film "Cabin In the Woods", Area 51 has a theme of "unknown" which needs to be explored by a "fresh-faced" actor. Those two films also have an already established fan base of people who read and know a lot about conspiracy theory, it has a special target audience with which a company like Lionsgate works and understands really well since it doesn't have a profound marketing strategy and rather consecrates on a specific group of people. It is also important to mention that Lionsgate as a company leaves space for film producers and directors for a lot of creativity and frankly doesn't interfere in comparison to other big and successful companies. Our liberty is particularly valuable to us as we need a lot of it when creating the rest of our film.
However it could also be a low concept film and get
produced by a company like Warp Films which supported "Four Lions" that was
a critically acclaimed movie. Both of these film's ideas are
based on the visual shock and targets the same primary
audience and therefore I think it could work as well.

Evaluation Task 2

In our sequence, the dominant figure is our main male character Chris Clark. He is in his mid 20's and represents the curious "explorer/investigator" bunch who are in a way idealists trying to find something magical and conjuring and prove our cynical society wrong. I believe that we conveyed a positive representation of such "nerdy" individual because the audience is rooting for him on his journey and also his innocent and vulnerable characteristic is pleasant to watch. His stereotypical wear like glasses indicate that he is in fact intelligent. The messiness inside the car transfers a level of untidy for our character but it is forgivable because he cares less about his appearances and more about finding the portal. Research books like "Area 51" help to support the idea that Clark is nerdy and "geeky". Tools like the tape measurer and a map prove that our character is nerdy because he appreciates science and looks for the exact measurements.

Clark's use of iPhone shows                  Our character in his costume
his love for technology which
is another stereotype for "nerdy"
individuals.
