Piracy in Music Industry

As the piracy level is increasing each year, a lot of companies in music industry become affected. With the latest technological devices like the internet, the access to illegal downloading becomes easier and less people are willing to pay for their music. Such action depreciates talented performers thus making it purely unfair.

One of the people who decided to show his disapproval regarding this matter is Lars Ulrich from Metallica. But instead of getting people to stop downloading music illegally, Ulrich got aggressive feedback from the public calling him greedy and money-obsessed. Therefore this could potentially be the reason why this problem isn't often raised by the artists.

Lilly Allen was another artist who dared to voice her opinion. She exclaimed that older successful artists had already the chance to make money before the arrival of digital piracy but the new artists are the ones who truly suffer as they won't be able to make a living from music career. In the same abusive manner as fellow artist Lars Ulrich got, Allen received aggressive responses and even death threats which made her shut down her website.

As Massive Attack pointed out, the amount of illegal downloads on unlicensed sites is purely shocking. It could be 25,000 per site and if you multiply it by all the unlicensed sites in the world, the artist's whole profit is gone! As Noel Gallangher from Oasis put it "it cost me a quarter of a million pounds to make it, you're not getting it for nothing. I want my quarter of a million back."

Something really poignant was mentioned by Billy Corgan when he compared music culture to service culture due to the fact that now people have the choice to either pay or not pay for their music as the technology allows them to. Corgan also realized that nowadays artists have to please and beg the public to come and see them so they could gain some kind of other profit in this tough industry.

Overall this could very be the changing point for music industry as problems with piracy rise and the level of playing field is dropping in favor of an ordinary synthetic pop star.

What we've done so far: Presentation on theories of Negus and Dyer: Synthetic v.s. Organic

As of today, 7th of June, 2013 I am starting my A2 Media course. This school year we are going to focus on the music industry. Going into this, I don't know as much as I did at the beginning of an AS course but never the less i am excited to learn about it. Some of my favorite artists include Frank Ocean, Notorious B.I.G and Kanye West. The reason I like those performers as much as I do is because they worked incredibly hard for everything they got or they have and also for their distinctive style of sound and performance. Also I am a big fan of a Majestic Casual channel on Youtube which produces remixes variety of songs which could be indie-pop, house or rap. I also like to attend summer festivals like the well-known Tomorrowland in Brussels or the Heineken Opener Festival in Poland.

Evaluation Task 5

Since our thriller has an aspect of sci-fi in it, our primary audience will be between the ages of 16 to 25, it will also be targeted at male audiences mostly due to the presence of supernatural creatures and violence in this particular film. As a team, we didn’t want to target “Equinox” at a younger audience because we wanted people to appreciate the slower pace of the events happening in a thriller as well as notice the details which will eventually contribute to the meaning of the film.

First, we built up the tension by using the alarming sounds when the titles were rolling to lure the audience but we also used the passing of time as the motif, which was indicated by an alarm going off and character constantly looking at his watch.

Our main visual effect which we consider the “eyecandy” in the film, is the portal. Its main purpose is to intrigue the audience and transfer them into another world where anything or everything is possible.

Our secondary audience should be between the ages of 26 to 35. The reason we believe this age group is our secondary audience is because story wise our film is interesting and different. This audience is mature enough to really appreciate the films vision and the motif. It is also highly likely that they will be able to emotionally connect and understand our main character Chris Clark who is not a typical hero like the handsome Clark Kent from Superman or as wealthy as Bruce Wayne but he is curious, real and persistent which in its self is humbly admiring.

We are planning to appeal to our secondary audience through the unhurried shots of the countryside and the character’s vehicle at the beginning of the opening sequence which would be more agreeable with those who appreciate the detailed storytelling in the film.
